Try it Tuesday {D&C Reference Companion}

Welcome to
"Try it Tuesday & Review."

If you are new to my blog, I'm so excited you found me. I write reviews on some pretty amazing products so this is the place to come to read my opinion.

Today, I wanted to share a wonderful reference companion to the Doctrine and Covenants. What is the Doctrine and Covenants? The Doctrine and Covenants is a collection of revelations and declarations to help regulate Christ's church in the latter days (1830-1978 AD). If you would like to learn more about The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, go {HERE}.

About:

The Doctrine and Covenants Reference Companion is an informative and exhaustive resource brought about with by the work of 127 authors, many of whom are well-renown gospel scholars, and many other contributors.
More than seven years in the making, it addresses some 850 topics—people, places, words, phrases, doctrines, historical context and overviews of each section, and much more—as it provides expansive research in easy-to-read language and format. Numerous photographs of historical documents, places, and persons, as well as maps, charts, and tables, enhance the study of the revelations given to Joseph Smith as the Lord restored his Church in the latter days.

The volume contains two main sections: the first includes an encyclopedic-style listing of doctrinal topics and every person and place mentioned in the revelations and doctrinal topics from Aaron to Zoramites; the second give historical context and overview of sections 1-138. The volume also includes several detailed appendices and a useful index.
Christine Rappleye of the Deseret News said of the book that “the list of scholars is impressive and their work shows in the thorough research.”
The Doctrine and Covenants Reference Companion includes—
  • Entries on the Doctrine and Covenants from A to Z.
  • Concise explanations of topics followed by a more in-depth treatment.
  • An internal reference system to guide the reader to related articles.
  • Historical accounts of important figures in the restoration of the Church.
  • A treatise on each individual section of the Doctrine and Covenants and principal doctrines of the gospel, including sacred ordinances, the priesthood and its keys, eternal marriage, salvation for the dead, and the atonement of Jesus Christ.
The Doctrine and Covenants Reference Companion is the first work of its scope ever published on the Doctrine and Covenants. It is truly comprehensive and authoritative. Those who desire to improve their understanding of the history and restoration of the Church will find this volume to be an indispensable part of their gospel library.

In my opinion:

The Doctrine and Covenants Reference Companion is perfect for 2013 since we are studying the D&C this year. This book came at the right time because my husband actually teaches Gospel Doctrine (a class taught in church using the Book of Mormon, Bible, D&C or Pearl of Great Price). This is an outstanding book and I especially liked the historical context and overview of each section. The authors highlighted each section in detail so one can understand the history and the theme of each section. This book is pretty remarkable and I bet a lot of time and effort went forth to bring additional study materials.  I definitely recommend that you order this book. I know you will gain a deeper appreciation of the Doctrine and Covenants by using the reference companion.

Disclaimer: I received one or more of the products or services for free in the hope that I would mention them on my blog. Regardless, I only recommend products or services I use personally and believe will be good for my readers
